PISTON MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS

IR Telemetrics is the global technology leader in providing wireless transfer of data from internal reciprocating and rotating components, such as pistons. We developed technology to meet industry's need for a compact, lightweight, reliable, wireless data transfer device which can be installed on pistons and meet the stringent demands of harsh operating environments in internal combustion and diesel engines.

Piston measurement systems are custom-designed by IR Telemetrics to provide Real time steady state, dynamic and transient data transfer from pistons and other components operating in their production environment is our specialty at IR Telemetrics. Piston measurement is inherently difficult in harsh operating environments such as internal combustion engines operating at high speeds and inertial loading. Pistons are especially challenging to measure because they are constantly in high-speed motion. However, wireless piston measurement is reliable and accurate with IR Telemetrics.

IR Telemetrics develops leading edge piston measurement technology. All our piston telemetry systems are custom built to fit our customers' package requirements and come with a 100% guarantee for successful data transmission throughout the duration of your test. IRT's wireless transmitters can be powered by batteries or inductively, depending on cost, timing, and space constraints.  IR Telemetrics will exceed your expectations in piston measurement.

Any combination of piston measurements can be sent in real-time, allowing relationships between temperature, ring pressure, acceleration, wrist pin rotation, and ring motion.

PISTON TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT

  • Steady-state embedded temperature
  • High-Speed, crank angle resolved crown surface temperature

Precise and reliable real time engine piston temperature measurement with wireless telemetry and custom thermocouples.  Piston temperature measurements are accomplished through Analog RF Telemetry Systems designed to provide the accuracy and highest resolution possible. Whether your piston temperature measurements require single or multiple channel data transfer, IR Telemetrics can provide you with a state-of-the-art telemetry system to meet your piston temperature measurement needs.

PISTON RING LAND PRESSURE MEASUREMENT

Measure gas pressure around the rings using a lightweight, durable, and versatile wireless data transfer device and wireless telemetry technology. Robust pressure transducers can be mounted in multiple locations to acquire crank angle resolved dynamic pressures in the lands and groves. Choose leading edge piston pressure measurement technology to fulfill your specific measurement needs.

State-of-the-art piston pressure measurement is driven by the challenge of expanding the application of wireless data transfer to meet the development needs of our customers.

PISTON RING MOTION MEASUREMENT

Ring motion measurement is routinely supported by our wireless telemetry systems utilizing our custom-built non-contact proximity sensors mounted in the ring lands.  Because ring motion measurements are crucial to predicting the long-term performance, friction and wear behavior of pistons, our combination of sensor and transmitter packaging and installation services yield guaranteed results.

WRIST PIN ROTATION MEASUREMENT

Measurement of Wrist Pin Rotation relative to piston is achieved using IRT's Proprietary Patented Rotation Sensor and wireless telemetry technology. Our system not only measures the angular value, but also the angular velocity, direction, and number of rotations over the course of a running cycle. These values provide insight to lubrication and bearing design. By optimizing these factors, engineers can reduce losses and improve overall engine performance and efficiency. Leading engine manufacturers have relied for years on data from our Wrist Pin Rotation Sensor to guide their design optimization.

PISTON PROXIMITY MEASUREMENT

With our Non-Contact Proximity Sensor and wireless telemetry technology, accurately measure the proximity of the piston to the cylinder wall. This allows engineers to evaluate secondary piston motion within the cylinder. Piston proximity measurements are made possible by IR Telemetrics’ advanced RF Analog Telemetry Systems.

PISTON STRAIN MEASUREMENT

Piston Strain measurements can be recorded in real-time using our wireless RF Analog Telemetry Systems. Transmitting data from the operating piston in real-time allows strain data from multiple gauges to be recorded at high frequency.  With expert support staff providing installation and packaging on the piston and connecting rod, piston strain measurement data acquisition is guaranteed.

PISTON FRICTION MEASUREMENT

The Piston Friction Measurement System from IRT quantifies crank angle resolved piston friction in an operating engine. This product is a combination of our hardware, technology, and engineering services. We determine piston friction through a combination of wireless measurements on the connecting rod and a sophisticated, proprietary algorithm that calculates the instantaneous friction at any point in the engine cycle. Because we take measurements from a standard running engine, our system accurately represents production values. Furthermore, our measurements allow us to output the friction at the pin journal end and the wrist pin end of the connecting rod. Having individual values for friction enables engineers to optimize their design performance with minimal investment.
